Are you thinking about adding a Rottweiler puppy to the family? While being a 'puppy-parent-in-waiting' is super exciting, please take a moment to consider the investment as well:
Finally the big day has arrived! Taking a new puppy home is an exciting adventure for the entire family! Here's a few tips to make the memorable day more pleasant:
Why do puppies bite? Puppies bite because that is how they discover and interact with the world around them - it plays an important role in their socialization. They can’t pick things up with their paws, so they try to do it with their mouths! It’s important to know that puppy biting is extremely normal and expected.
It is generally recommended to wait until 12 to 24 months to spay or neuter a Rottweiler. Because they are large, slow-maturing dogs, waiting until they are physically mature (around 2 years) allows growth plates to close, which reduces the risk of joint issues and certain cancers.
Key Considerations for Timing:
It is highly recommended to discuss the best time for your specific dog with your veterinarian, as they can assess your dog's physical development and risk factors.
Large breed puppies need a low fat diet to prevent rapid growth and weight gain. Rapid growth in a large breed puppy can lead to skeletal malformations, joint stress, and reduced bone density. Be sure to do your own research about the dietary needs of Rottweiler puppies!!
While its most important to choose a Large Bred Puppy formula, its also good to look at the ingredient list! Make sure the first 2 ingredients are a meat product! Stay away from grain-free diets. We feed NutriSource Large Breed Puppy Food (Chicken And Rice Recipe).
Rottweiler puppies should be fed 3 times a day while they are small. A little bedtime snack when they are 8-10 wks helps to prevent low blood-sugar overnight. Around 6 months, transition to feeding twice a day. See below for information about treats.
At 8-10 weeks, set out about 3/4 cup of food at mealtime. Take away whatever is left in the bowl 20 min. later. Amount of food increases as the puppy grows, see dog food bag for details. The old rule of thumb- you should be able to feel your pup's ribs but not see them.

To help bridge nutritional gaps, we like to give our puppies a multivitamin. Our Rottweiler puppies have done great with NutriVet's Puppy-Vite tabs. They apparently have wonderful flavor because all of our adolexcents are eager to obey any command just to have one!

For our Rottweilers, we use K9 Restore and K9 Rebalance to boost the immune system, treat small infections without antibiotics, or to support the natural healing process after an injury or surgery even if other meds are required. The results are impressive. Check out Elite Nutritions other supplements as well.
